Fogelsode S2 #8: Fun Week in Santa Cruz

It’s been an awesome week around here, with the sun shining and friends like Christian in town.  We took advantage of the weather and trail conditions to get in a fun day of riding big bikes.  Another day, Jeff and I had a cool little sesh at the step-up, before heading over to Post Office.  The classic sundown-seshes have become routine this time of year, but what’s new are some of the younger riders like Jared, Simon, and Fin shredding with us.  Just a week ago they were doing run-ups into the line and now they’re flowing through with style and even throwing a few tricks!  Stuff like that always gets me stoked to see!

Fogelsode S2 #5: James' Santa Cruz Trip

James Visser just made the trip up here from San Diego to ride and chill for a week.  Due to the steady rain, most spots were far from running, but with a little work we got in a nice session on Hone’s jumps early in the week.  The trails were running great despite a few puddles here and there, so we got some runs in out there as well.  However, we spent the most time at the step-up, as the sand soaks up most of the rain and it runs great this time of year.  Towards the end of the week we got a big sesh going out there, with Greg throwing down some big tricks like a bar to tailwhip and even a double flip!  James went for the double flip, and got close, but under rotated on one and landed right on his head.  Thankfully he was perfectly fine after a moment of shock, so everyone decided to call it after that.  It was a rad week of shredding, enjoy!

New Website and Vid!

My buddies and I have been toying with the idea of making a website for a while now, and finally made it happen.  It’s pretty simple, just a blog where our crew can post the latest happenings, pictures, and videos to get anyone who’s interested stoked.  The plan is to make a series of web videos to go with the site, of which we finished the first last week.  I’m really stoked how it turned out, especially the downhill shots as we got to capture the first rain of the season!

Fogelsode S2 #2: Afternoon Seshes at Post

If there’s one thing that never fails to make me want to ride, it’s school.  Nothing like going through a day of classes, notes, tests, and homework with the urge to ride building as you watch each second tick by on the clock.  Fortunately I’m blessed to have Post Office down the street from my school.  With the crazy hot days we’ve been having this week, everyone’s been waiting until the sun begins to set before heading out to the jumps.  It’s been a good routine:  roll up in the late afternoon, give the jumps a nice watering, sip some iced tea, and start riding as the light turns golden and as it starts to cool down.  The shadows of lips and landings grow longer and longer until the sun has fully made its way past the horizon.  This is the best time to ride as it’s the coolest out and there’s a nice even lighting for a short while before it gets too dark to see.  It’s been good times getting seshes like these in here and there, keeping us all sane after school.

A Couple of Vids

Fogelsode #24: Sea Otter and Post Office Jam

Well, better late than never I suppose.  This Sea Otter was my favorite to date, with rad trains on the downhill course, perfect weather, and good times with the crew!  Epic got me set-up with their Epic HD helmet cam so that I could get some onboard footage of the downhill course.  It worked out great, and I ended up filming with that most of the time because I could ride and film at the same time!

The Post Office Jam was about as perfect as it could have been!  With rain showing up on the forecast, everyone was unsure as they rolled up to the jumps.  It was overcast, and looked like it could rain any second, but it didn’t, resulting in my favorite type of weather to ride in.  Everyone had a good time and threw down, with some highlights being Brandon’s corked 720, the longest train Post Office has ever seen, and Alex Pro going for a swim.  It was definitely one of the most fun days of riding that I’ve had; seshin’ all day with tons of riders that I don’t see very often!  Plus nobody got hurt!  To top it all off,we ended the day with some hefty burritos at Gordos.

Post Office Jam

This should be one killer session as a lot of talent are in town - hopefully weather stays good.



I'm sure once Brandon gets a chance he'll post up results of Team Geronimo's results. They didn't do too badly considering its kind of like giant 4x course, and they beat some a few of the top guys so congrats to them. I managed to find Rob on Skype and he said it was definitely a good time and was great to meet all the people that showed up to take it all in.

Anyway if you are around ... go check out the Jam... it should be a really great time.

Fogelsode #23: Some of My Sandier Days

After a few days of steady rain, most of the spots turned into swamps while the step-up got nice and soft.  The wet sand sticks together nicely, so we took advantage of it and rebuilt the trick drop.  After a solid and sandy sesh on that, we had the idea to build a lip next to it for a “trick step-down”.  Before we knew it, it was all ready to ride!  I had the urge to flip it, as one of my goals this year was to flip a step-down, so I took a few practice runs and went for it.  It felt super crazy flipping while falling, so I bailed and got a mouthful of sand.  Thankfully that was it, so I hiked back up and tried it again…and again, and again, until I finally started committing all the way.  I started landing on my wheels, but kept sliding out until the run I stuck it!  That’s definitely one of the best feelings!

We were back a few days later for another sesh.  David landed his first backflip, Kevin got used to his new bike, and Jeff worked on his barspins.  We had a fun sesh on a cool hip that someone recently built.  It’s a right hip, so it was nice to practice some tricks on, as almost every hip around here is to the left.  I’m getting pretty stoked on that place this time of year.  With all of these new lines and the ease of making more, it’s turning into a rad spot to learn and dial in pretty much whatever you want!

Fogelsode #21: Jumps in the Afternoon, Trails in the Evening

Another advantage of longer days: riding dirt jumps in the afternoon and trails in the evening!  David, Jeff, Kevin, and I cruised out to Post Office for a fun little ride.  Kevin was steezin up a storm with big smooth whips, and Jeff was styling through, throwing some sick 3’s!  David and I had a good time messing around with the different lines, trying to jump over each other and cross each other’s lines as close as possible.  It ended up being an awesome time, just taking it easy and having fun at the jumps. David had to go to work, so we dropped him off and continued into the mountains where we met up with Cob and Iggy.  Dan joined up a little later and we had a cool little session on some fun sections of trail.  Cob and Iggy were getting sideways off a nice high-speed triple, killing it as always.  Eventually we ran out of light, which nobody complained about as we were all pretty tired.  Solid day!

Oh and earlier in the week, I met up with local photographer, Connor Luther, to help him with a project for his photography class.  Actually I don’t really know if “help” is the right word.  I just rode and he nailed some sick shots!

Fogelsode #20: Enjoying the Long Days!

Daylight Savings Time is upon us, and what can I say…it ROCKS!  Nothing like getting the chance to ride everyday, regardless of work or school schedules!  So it’ll be of no surprise to you that there’ve been seshes at Post Office everyday of the week.  It doesn’t get any better than that!

Well almost.  It could have been better if our buddy Brad didn’t break his ankle.  There’s this cool new transfer off the new wood lip onto the landing to the right.  Brian Miller has been killing it, throwing huge 360s and tailwhips over it.  Brad wanted to try to ally-oop 3 it, which would be super crazy because he would be turning left off the lip, but have to transfer over to the right.  He went for it, transferred over perfectly, but ended up over rotating and over clearing.  He landed on his feet, but the way he landed caused his left ankle to break in 3 places.  He handled it like it wasn’t a big deal at all, and ended up driving home later that day!  He’s going in for surgery on Monday to get it reset, so hopefully it won’t be too long before he’s back in action!  Get well soon Brad!

Towards the end of the week we realized that with a new berm and a few rollers here and there, we could have a little pumptrack that would weave through parts of the existing lines.  By that evening it was done, and after a classic sundown sesh on the jumps, we turned it over to a big pumptrack session.  It ended up being a great (and tiring) time, finding new lines and racing friends.  With the warmer weather, the longer days, and events like Sea Otter around the corner, the “off-season” is beginning to transition into the on-season!

Fogelsode #17: Rain Rain Rain

After a long week of school and rain, I was craving to get out and ride!  It was an overcast morning, so I got ready, opened the garage, grabbed my bike, and BAM!  It started pouring!  I almost just went back inside, but really wanted to ride, so I set off into the storm!  Riding down the street towards the trail, I thought to myself “Man, this is the worst idea ever, I’m already soaked.”  It improved in the woods though, and once I got going it got better and better.  There were some corners that I stopped and sessioned because they were so fun drifting around, hoping the tires wouldn’t slide out.  It was also my first ride on my new Straitline pedals!  I am impressed to say the least with them; that ride was in some of the worst possible conditions for pedals, yet my feet didn’t slip once!  All in all it was a great time bombing some fun trails in the rain!

At another point in the week, I met up with Justin Brantley to do a photoshoot in some dryer conditions.  We spent some time on this particular corner, where he was seeing how close he could get with his new wide angle lens!  I set up the camera just to see, and switched the angles around a few times after that.  Of course, Justin nailed some bangers!

Fogelsode #14: Flowy Trails and Big Drifts

We got hit by a small storm this week, making for lots of digging.  The rain was pretty light during a few days, so Max and I went out for a trail ride!  The dirt was great, so we sessioned a fun set of s-berms.  We continued down the trail to a cool little line that I built last winter.  It’s a berm into a hip step-down followed by a straight step-up.  Max was hitting it dialed, but the time we filmed it he overcleared the step-down and nosed cased into the back of the step-up landing!  Luckily he was all good!  I threw a few tailwhips over it and we moved on down the trail.  We reached a fun flowy section with some turns that drop away at their exits.  They’re super fun because you can lean into them and go weightless as you fall towards the next corner.  One has a fun high speed jump after it, that we ended up hitting a few times!  The rain started to pick up, plus it was getting dark, so we got out of there!

My buddy has some property up in the mountains that we’ve been building on every now and then.  The rain loosened up the dirt quite a bit, so we spent a day digging out there.  Near sunset everyone was pretty tired, so we busted out the dirt bikes and Rhino to moto around a little track that’s up there!  Matt was doing some crazy drifts in the Rhino, one time almost flipping it!  Everyone else raced around on the dirt bikes, which was tons of fun because it was the first time riding them for most of us!  Definitely a great way to end the day!  Just good times hanging out, building, riding, and messing around with friends!

Fogelsode #12: Making the Best of a Stormy Week

As the title suggests, we got hit by a big storm this week!  We spent most of the week over at Cob’s house, digging on the jumps.  The storm kept messing up the surfaces of everything, so we mostly piled dirt for a new line.  We put in a new underground drain and Cob worked his magic on the sixth hip landing.  I’m getting super stoked on that place, and can see some crazy seshes going down in the spring!  It’s a cool set up out there, with a dialed barn that you can chill in when the rain gets too gnarly.  After a few days of straight digging everyone started to come up with new things to do.  One was to drive around on the forest roads to check out the damage.  There were quite a few fallen trees, with some downed power-lines to go with them!  We found a muddy pull-off and Clay blasted through it in his truck!  Still raining, we found some old snow saucers and took them to the abandoned quarry to do some sledding (which ultimately ended up as a sore next day)!  Definitely some good times having fun in the rain though!

Towards the end of the week, the rain let up and Iggy and I set out to rip some muddy trails!  We rode some sick all-mountain trails, with rad high speed sections and fast jumps!  It was sick plowing through puddles and drifting wet corners!  It felt great getting out for a ride after not doing so for a few days as well!

Fogelsode #11: Steep Trails and Rainy Dirt Jumps

We got some rain early this week, making for some nice trails!  The crew rolled out to Santa Cruz to do some runs and we ended up seshing a cool trail with a whole bunch of ladders!  There were tons of loamy berms, wooden drops, step-downs, and a big wallride, making for a good time!  Towards the end of the ride, we headed over to a new drop that we’ve been working on.  Cob and Clayton finished clearing out the landing and Iggy was the guinea pig.  It was super dark but he hit it like it was nothing.  Epic day for sure!

We got more rain that night, and decided to check out Cob’s jumps the next day!  They looked good, with no puddles!  We swept the leaves off, did some touch-ups on the lips and landings, carpeted the newly redone second lip, and brought out the bikes!  Matt showed up to help out and the sesh was on!  Right when we started riding, it started to rain, but very lightly.  We just planned on jumping until it got too wet, but it never did.  The rain was just on and off through the day, and the jumps stayed awesome!  It’s not very common to dirt jump in the rain, so it was cool to get a chance to do it!  Everyone killed it; Matt threw some big tucks and one-footed tables, and Cob opened up a can of 100% Grade A Concentrated Steeze.  I was having fun 3ing the second jump, and did my first topside-whip on the fourth hip!  I started downside canning that hip, and tried throwing a table in there.  It felt crazy, but worked out and started to feel pretty cool!  Overall it was an awesome sesh, just having fun riding in the rain while learning a couple new tricks!  It started to get dark, so Cob did some patching while Matt and I covered up the lips and berm with carpet.  There’s supposed to be a huge storm this week, so hopefully that protects them a little bit haha!

Fogelsode #10: Wood Kickers and Sandy Drops

Winter has been great so far with its nice cool weather!  We got a huge sesh going at the step-up and everyone threw down!  David landed his first backflip and Kevin got close on some 720s!  We checked out a cool little sandy cliff next to the jump, and decided to build a “trick drop”.  We found a piece of plywood for the takeoff and quickly shoveled out a landing.  It was perfect, with a solid takeoff into a nice and soft landing with a wide run-out.  The size was great too--not too big to be scary, but not too small to have time for tricks.  I’ve been wanting to try some tricks off drops for a while, and this was the perfect time to make it happen.  The first trick was no-foot-cans, which were scary at first but ended up working out well!  The second was tailwhips, which I thought would be really difficult.  It’s actually a lot like tailwhipping a jump, you just have to give it a nice bunnyhop-kick off the lip and trust that you will spin the whole thing on the way down.  It feels so weird tailwhipping only while falling, but it’s sick once you get used to it!  The third trick was 360s.  I had tried 3s off the same drop about a year ago, but only landed two.  It ended up working out perfectly first try, so I was stoked on that!  Everything got really fun after that, just practicing and dialing them in!  Jeff was killing it too, with some big tuck-no-handers off the drop!

Matt really wanted to stop by Post Office on the way back, to 360 the wood jump there.  The lip had a weird kink in it due to a few broken boards, so it was pretty sketchy!  Matt tried a few times, but ended up getting messed up in the air and bailing.  Zack nailed some 3s over it though, so that was cool to see!  David was shredding on it too, with some big tucks and fat no-foot-cans.  Overall just a lot of good times learning and practicing new and old tricks!

Fogelsode #9: Step-Ups!

There’s been on and off rain through the week, making most of the jumps unridable.  Fortunately, the step-ups are in great shape because the sand absorbs the water and gets nice and soft.  Ray and I decided to take advantage of this and rolled over to the Aptos step-up to work on some tricks.  When we got there, we found that the run-in was covered in some dense mud-like sand, but we got it all cleared out fast and began the sesh.  Ray was killing it with some dialed 3s, fat no-foot-cans, and big nothings.  He even seat-landed a few no-kick tailwhips!  I wanted to try some cannonballs, so I gave them a shot and they ended up working out!  I started messing around with no-foot-can variations after that, and did some no-handed no-foot-cans and seat-grab-cans!  It was a fun day of learning new tricks and practicing old ones!

Later in the week, Iggy, Cob, and I cruised out to the other step-up for a quick New Years sesh.  Cob and I decided to try 720s.  We both under-rotated and fell, but I felt like I could get closer.  I tried a few more and ended up riding out of one with a foot down!  Low on light, we packed up and headed home.  Overall it was an awesome week, especially with everything being so wet!
