Fogelsode #23: Some of My Sandier Days

After a few days of steady rain, most of the spots turned into swamps while the step-up got nice and soft.  The wet sand sticks together nicely, so we took advantage of it and rebuilt the trick drop.  After a solid and sandy sesh on that, we had the idea to build a lip next to it for a “trick step-down”.  Before we knew it, it was all ready to ride!  I had the urge to flip it, as one of my goals this year was to flip a step-down, so I took a few practice runs and went for it.  It felt super crazy flipping while falling, so I bailed and got a mouthful of sand.  Thankfully that was it, so I hiked back up and tried it again…and again, and again, until I finally started committing all the way.  I started landing on my wheels, but kept sliding out until the run I stuck it!  That’s definitely one of the best feelings!

p4pb4865106[1]We were back a few days later for another sesh.  David landed his first backflip, Kevin got used to his new bike, and Jeff worked on his barspins.  We had a fun sesh on a cool hip that someone recently built.  It’s a right hip, so it was nice to practice some tricks on, as almost every hip around here is to the left.  I’m getting pretty stoked on that place this time of year.  With all of these new lines and the ease of making more, it’s turning into a rad spot to learn and dial in pretty much whatever you want!

Enjoy!

Fogelsode #20: Enjoying the Long Days!

Daylight Savings Time is upon us, and what can I say…it ROCKS!  Nothing like getting the chance to ride everyday, regardless of work or school schedules!  So it’ll be of no surprise to you that there’ve been seshes at Post Office everyday of the week.  It doesn’t get any better than that!

p4pb4742882[1]

Well almost.  It could have been better if our buddy Brad didn’t break his ankle.  There’s this cool new transfer off the new wood lip onto the landing to the right.  Brian Miller has been killing it, throwing huge 360s and tailwhips over it.  Brad wanted to try to ally-oop 3 it, which would be super crazy because he would be turning left off the lip, but have to transfer over to the right.  He went for it, transferred over perfectly, but ended up over rotating and over clearing.  He landed on his feet, but the way he landed caused his left ankle to break in 3 places.  He handled it like it wasn’t a big deal at all, and ended up driving home later that day!  He’s going in for surgery on Monday to get it reset, so hopefully it won’t be too long before he’s back in action!  Get well soon Brad!

p4pb4742891[1]

Towards the end of the week we realized that with a new berm and a few rollers here and there, we could have a little pumptrack that would weave through parts of the existing lines.  By that evening it was done, and after a classic sundown sesh on the jumps, we turned it over to a big pumptrack session.  It ended up being a great (and tiring) time, finding new lines and racing friends.  With the warmer weather, the longer days, and events like Sea Otter around the corner, the “off-season” is beginning to transition into the on-season!

Enjoy!

Fogelsode #18: Bike Building and the Sandiest Step-Up

After about a month of the Amp being out of commission from snapping the fork at Woodward, I got a new fork, along with quite a few other goodies!  Huge thanks go out to Nuke Proof, Straitline, and Gamut for getting me all set up with a new build for the Amp!  I loaded up my truck and drove on down to Scotts Valley Cycle Sport to build it up.  I got more and more excited with each part installed until it was finally complete!  It’s basically a brand new bike now, and I was stoked that it ended up being so light, coming in at just under 25.6 pounds!

With huge amounts of stokage, I grabbed a burrito, put my pads on, threw my bike in the truck, and drove straight over to the local step-up.  As I was driving it started raining, but I didn’t care, I just wanted to ride!  As soon as I pulled in to park, the rain stopped and I cruised down the trail to meet up with Justin, Max, Cob, and Clay.  Justin did what he does and nailed some awesome shots of my bike before I got it all sandy!p4pb4673892[1]After that, the sesh was on and everyone started throwing down!  It rained on and off throughout the day, but that just kept the landing nice and moist!  Clay nailed a couple flatspin 360s and Max learned sick no-foot-cans!  Cob was killing it with some huge no-foot-cans, supermans, dumped 3s, and tabled-dumped 3s!  I worked on getting used to riding a hardtail again, which luckily didn’t take long.  It was crazy tricking this bike after riding my Rampant for so long!  Don’t get me wrong, the Rampant tricks easy, but this bike is almost too easy.  The first tailwhip I did was around before I even knew I kicked it!  I was stoked to get some flip-whips, 3-whips, no-foot-can flips, and superflips in throughout the day!  Soon the sesh came to an end and we packed up and cruised out.  I’m absolutely stoked on the new set-up and can’t wait to ride it some more!

Fogelsode #15: Woodward Round 2

Cob and I left early Saturday morning to road trip down to Woodward West.  It was pouring rain when we left, and thinking we would drive out of the storm, it got worse and eventually started to snow when we got into Tehachapi!  We met up with James Visser and hurried into The Hanger to stay dry!  We warmed up by pumping around the park for a bit, and started seshing the foam and resi!  Probably 10 minutes into being there, my bike got away from me on a trick into foam, and made a loud snapping noise when it hit the ground.  I climbed out of the foam pit to see my fork snapped in half with oil puddling up around it!  Thankfully I had my Rampant, and rode that for the rest of the time!  James started nailing some dialed double flips into the foam, and decided to take them to resi.  He dropped in and everyone went silent as he yanked back off the lip.  He spun the whole thing but landed to flat and fell!  He got up and tried it a few more times until he nailed it!  The trip was off to a great start!  Later he did his first tailwhips to pedals over the resi!  I was stoked to learn no-foot-can flips and one-foot-x-up to barspins over the resi, plus I ended up tailwhipping the resi superpipe!  We all took a break from the resi/foam and seshed the park for a while.  Cob had some crazy lines going, blasting out of the quarters and boosting tricks over the box!  He dialed in some techy manual and tire tap lines as well!  Cob and James ripped it up in the bowls, doing some sick lines like the bowl-to-bowl wallride transfer!  We seshed the box jump a bit, and did some trains through the park and on the resi.  I was really surprised how well the Rampant did in the park!  I thought I wouldn’t be able to do anything, but it was almost like riding my Amp!  We did this quarterpipe to bank transfer that was really fun, and I ended up downside-whipping it after a few tries, so I was really stoked on that!  Everyone threw down and left with at least one new trick learned on the resi!

Enjoy!

Fogelsode #11: Steep Trails and Rainy Dirt Jumps

We got some rain early this week, making for some nice trails!  The crew rolled out to Santa Cruz to do some runs and we ended up seshing a cool trail with a whole bunch of ladders!  There were tons of loamy berms, wooden drops, step-downs, and a big wallride, making for a good time!  Towards the end of the ride, we headed over to a new drop that we’ve been working on.  Cob and Clayton finished clearing out the landing and Iggy was the guinea pig.  It was super dark but he hit it like it was nothing.  Epic day for sure!

We got more rain that night, and decided to check out Cob’s jumps the next day!  They looked good, with no puddles!  We swept the leaves off, did some touch-ups on the lips and landings, carpeted the newly redone second lip, and brought out the bikes!  Matt showed up to help out and the sesh was on!  Right when we started riding, it started to rain, but very lightly.  We just planned on jumping until it got too wet, but it never did.  The rain was just on and off through the day, and the jumps stayed awesome!  It’s not very common to dirt jump in the rain, so it was cool to get a chance to do it!  Everyone killed it; Matt threw some big tucks and one-footed tables, and Cob opened up a can of 100% Grade A Concentrated Steeze.  I was having fun 3ing the second jump, and did my first topside-whip on the fourth hip!  I started downside canning that hip, and tried throwing a table in there.  It felt crazy, but worked out and started to feel pretty cool!  Overall it was an awesome sesh, just having fun riding in the rain while learning a couple new tricks!  It started to get dark, so Cob did some patching while Matt and I covered up the lips and berm with carpet.  There’s supposed to be a huge storm this week, so hopefully that protects them a little bit haha!

Enjoy!

Oh and those 2010 bikes are looking sooooo dialed!  You guys rule!

Fogelsode #10: Wood Kickers and Sandy Drops

Winter has been great so far with its nice cool weather!  We got a huge sesh going at the step-up and everyone threw down!  David landed his first backflip and Kevin got close on some 720s!  We checked out a cool little sandy cliff next to the jump, and decided to build a “trick drop”.  We found a piece of plywood for the takeoff and quickly shoveled out a landing.  It was perfect, with a solid takeoff into a nice and soft landing with a wide run-out.  The size was great too--not too big to be scary, but not too small to have time for tricks.  I’ve been wanting to try some tricks off drops for a while, and this was the perfect time to make it happen.  The first trick was no-foot-cans, which were scary at first but ended up working out well!  The second was tailwhips, which I thought would be really difficult.  It’s actually a lot like tailwhipping a jump, you just have to give it a nice bunnyhop-kick off the lip and trust that you will spin the whole thing on the way down.  It feels so weird tailwhipping only while falling, but it’s sick once you get used to it!  The third trick was 360s.  I had tried 3s off the same drop about a year ago, but only landed two.  It ended up working out perfectly first try, so I was stoked on that!  Everything got really fun after that, just practicing and dialing them in!  Jeff was killing it too, with some big tuck-no-handers off the drop!

Matt really wanted to stop by Post Office on the way back, to 360 the wood jump there.  The lip had a weird kink in it due to a few broken boards, so it was pretty sketchy!  Matt tried a few times, but ended up getting messed up in the air and bailing.  Zack nailed some 3s over it though, so that was cool to see!  David was shredding on it too, with some big tucks and fat no-foot-cans.  Overall just a lot of good times learning and practicing new and old tricks!

Enjoy!

Also, Zack just got his new Amp all built up, and it’s looking clean!  Check it out!DSC00058

Fogelsode #9: Step-Ups!

There’s been on and off rain through the week, making most of the jumps unridable.  Fortunately, the step-ups are in great shape because the sand absorbs the water and gets nice and soft.  Ray and I decided to take advantage of this and rolled over to the Aptos step-up to work on some tricks.  When we got there, we found that the run-in was covered in some dense mud-like sand, but we got it all cleared out fast and began the sesh.  Ray was killing it with some dialed 3s, fat no-foot-cans, and big nothings.  He even seat-landed a few no-kick tailwhips!  I wanted to try some cannonballs, so I gave them a shot and they ended up working out!  I started messing around with no-foot-can variations after that, and did some no-handed no-foot-cans and seat-grab-cans!  It was a fun day of learning new tricks and practicing old ones!

Later in the week, Iggy, Cob, and I cruised out to the other step-up for a quick New Years sesh.  Cob and I decided to try 720s.  We both under-rotated and fell, but I felt like I could get closer.  I tried a few more and ended up riding out of one with a foot down!  Low on light, we packed up and headed home.  Overall it was an awesome week, especially with everything being so wet!

I hope everyone had a great New Years!  2010 is going to be good!

Fogelsode #8: Merry Christmas!

Fogelsode #8 is up!  This week has been kind of slow, with lots of building and hanging out with the family.  Matt and I got a chance to go out and ride the step-up for a day though!  It was just an average sesh, so I wanted to do something new.  I remembered making a hip landing off to the right, two years ago when the jump was much smaller.  Since then, the lip is taller, further back, and there is a trail that goes between the straight landing and the hillside.  In order to hip it now, you would have to go much faster and clear over the trail to make it to the hillside.  I gave it a shot and it ended up working out!  With the sun beginning to set, I wanted to try some tricks on it.  I went for a topside-whip, but spun it way too fast and somehow landed backwards!  I’ve been wanting to hip-flip a jump for a while now, and figured this one would be good.  It took a few tries but I ended up sticking it and riding out clean!  Matt was getting in some sick shoulder buzzes and big 360s too!  Overall it was a fun sesh and a great time!  Also, when we were out building there have been some epic sunsets, so I grabbed the camera and got a few shots to include as well.  Hopefully everyone is enjoying the holidays and has a great New Year!

Enjoy!

On a side note, I’m stoked to say the Amp is up and running again!

Paul Genovese 2009

Paul Genovese is a 15 year old from my home town; Fernie, British Columbia. When I was home in the summer I first started hearing stories from the 13 year old dirt jumpers, then I asked some friends about him and they all described him the same way a quiet, young local with great style and bike control. I met him and his brother Nic (who is pretty good with a camera) at the local dirt jumps and I had to agree with my friends. Paul is a  super nice guy who does not say a lot and knows how to ride a bike. Watch out for him in 2010 …

Fogelsode #5: Funspot and Forest Freeride

Fogelsode #5 is online!  Mike Montgomery was in town for the weekend so we rode various spots around here.  When we went to the Funspot Bike Park, Mike absolutely killed it, throwing some crazy tricks over the big box!  He even nailed his two new tricks, the M/M 360 (superman seatgrab indian air 360) and the Rodeo 360 (360 so dumped it looks like a corkflip at the peak)!  Luke was there too, making some techy lines look smooth and easy!  The same day we rode the step-up and I learned a new trick, nothing to tailwhip!  They were kinda small, but we should have some pretty big jumps up and running in the next few weeks, so I’m hoping to get them more extended over those.  Mike helped me out with my dumped 3’s as well!

The second half was filmed up in the woods at a cool freeride trail.  We all brought out the fullys and had a blast riding something new and different!  We were sure to get plenty of runs in on the trails as well!

Enjoy!

On a side note, Justin Brantley has been SLAYING it behind the lens as usual!  Here’s a few shots from this week.

Fogelsode #4: Dirt Jump Kickball and Thanksgiving Trail Ride

Fogelsode #4 is up!  It started out with a fun little sesh at the dirt jumps, when Cob found a big red rubber ball!  We were doing a big train and Cob ran up next to a jump and held the ball above his head.  Everyone tried to kick it but the ball was too low.  I told him to throw it up when I did a tailwhip and it went flying!  Cam said we should get someone to try to catch the ball after I hit it and things got epic after that.  Cam and I did some tailwhips and we wanted to try some other tricks.  We though of no-foot-cans but figured they would just kick the ball downward.  Not for Jamie though!  He threw some huge Indian Cans and tapped the ball with his foot on one.  He went on to hit it with some nacs after that!

A few days later, on Thanksgiving, Matt, Christian, Iggy, and I got together for a trail ride.  I had just got my Rampant back up and running so I was stoked to get back on a fully!  It was sooooo much fun, especially with the short rain we got, making everything nice and loamy.  We wanted to film it a little different than most trail videos, so we set it up as staggered pairs of riders.  I was stoked how it came together and how much fun it was to ride!  There’s going to be a lot more riding on fullies in the future so look forward to that!

At the end there were some shots of drifting at Matt’s Ranch.  He took us up there to scope for building, so we found some lines and began to do some work.  It started raining though, but we are planning on heading out there next weekend.  He’s got a tractor too, so we should have some dialed lines runnin in no time!  Without further adieu, here’s Fogelsode #4!

Fogelsode #3: Rainy Step-Up and AT's Showdown

Fogelsode #3 is up!  I filmed the Post Office footy while taking a break from riding during a shoot with Guy and Josh for “The Locals.”  If you think the shots I got looked epic, you should see the shots Josh got!  He’s the first one to ever set up cable-cams at Post Office and nailed some amazing shots!  A few days later we got some rain and Christian was in town and wanted to ride, so we seshed the step-up and got some shots there.  You may have heard about AT’s Showdown in San Francisco, which went down Saturday.  That’s where the rest of the vid was filmed.  The comp was crazy with HUGE jumps.  The course began with a steep hill into a giant step-down.  You were haulin’ after that, so the next jump was an 8 foot tall kicker with a 35 foot gap!  Hands down the biggest jump I’ve ever hit!

The Step-Down!

The First Jump!

The last two jumps had 8 foot lips as well, with smaller gaps.  The format was a 1 hour qualifying jam where the top 16 qualify.  They move onto a dual-slalom type “showdown” bracket where 16th qualifier and 1st place qualifier each do one run, and the better run moves on.  This is done 15th against 2nd, 14th against 3rd, and so on.  Same goes for the next three rounds until the winner is determined.  I thought it was pretty cool because it was totally different from any other jump comp.  It would have been nice for each rider to get 2 runs instead of 1 though.  In the qualifying jam I did some tailwhips over the 2nd double and threw a cork flip, 3whips, and a flipwhip on the last.  The last jump was hard to clear, especially for flipping it, but I ended up riding out of most things.  I’m stoked on the flipwhip!  I ended up seat-landing and riding out, which was a relief as it was the first one I tried to dirt!

I ended up qualifying 14th, so I made it in!  In my final run I tailwhipped the 2nd jump and tried a 3-whip on the 3rd.  I missed my bike when I went to kick it and tried to bring it around, but landed sketchy and slid out.  It was a sick day though!  I was stoked alone on hitting those jumps, so getting to ride them all day with everyone was awesome!  My friend Iggy filmed the whole day so I could have some footage to use for the video.  Overall it was an awesome comp and I can’t wait till the next one!

Also, word on the street is my friend Mike could be getting the ramps from the comp, so we’ll definitely be busy building, riding, and shooting if that’s the case!

Anyway, here’s Fogelsode #3!  Enjoy!

Fogelsode #2: Early Post Office and the Return of Guy

Fogelsode #2 is online!  The beginning was shot at Post Office when Cob and I got out there just after sunrise to do a photoshoot with Justin Brantley.  I have to say, it felt weird riding so early, but was cool at the same time and offered some really nice lighting!  As always, Justin nailed some dialed shots, like this one:

Later in the week Matt and I headed out to the Aptos Step-Up and filmed a couple quick shots because the sunset was looking epic.  I tried some flipwhips and ended up getting my first one to pedals!  A couple days later, Guy and I seshed the Scotts Valley Step-Up so Guy could relearn his tricks after taking about two months off from riding because he had three back-to-back concussions.  We ended the day by meeting up with Iggy and Matt at the new pumptrack that we are working on, and tested out what we have so far.  Enjoy!

What I have been doing for this last month

So I got the chance to bring my tractor to my buddys place with good dirt and I have been building the jumps for about a month every single day. Its gotta be hard just to look at the photos and understand what going on but their is about five different lines in their somewhere with anything from transfers to pump tracks, normal jumps and big berms, The big set was just started in thease photos but they are about 20ft gaps and 7ft tall lips and landing that stand about 12ft tall and go deep into the ground.

Anyways theirs a bunch of photos of the new jumps and shot of me riding my small set
hope you enjoy
