Mike gets POD ...

Mike Montgomery is in todays Pinkbike POD. He is not actually on a Banshee in the picture but he is still kind of a big deal.

And just when you thought the Banshee - Mike Montgomery relationship could not get any more amazing or special Banshee goes and custom paints the rest of Mike's bikes for the 2011 season. Mike has not even seen pictures of his new rides. I thought I would share them with everyone at the same time. Bikes ship Monday (Sunday for you in the West) ... I will give you all Mike's address so you can try to intercept these beauties before he gets them.

Spitfire Bike Mags - Bible of Reviews

Go grab a copy of The Bible. We got a pretty kick ass review and were one of the 6 favorites out off all categories of bikes for the Spitfire. We also have a full page review and check that out... made front page of Bike Mags The Bible.
I've also been checking out BikeMags tweets and seems they have a new site up... looks pretty damn good. Go here to check it out

Thanks for sending this over Devon!

Change of seasons

As the snow starts to pile up on Colorado, I still have the itch to go ride my bike.

Steve's Spitfire

this lovely black Mythic Spitfire is brand new today - its 'birthday'

it belongs to a regular Freeborn customer - Steve G, who has been blasting around the muddy hills in South-East England on a Mythic Scirocco for several years

thanks to a generous allowance on his employers "Cycle 2 work" scheme, Steve now has a fully-suspended trail bike to take him to work, and back, over those muddy hills

his Spitfire is anodised black with Fox RP23 BV shock, 2011 Fox 32 Float RLC 150mm QR15 forks, Thomson and Sunline finishing kit, Sram X-9 9 speed shifting, Avid Elixir R disc brakes, Shimano SLX cranks and of course the sublime "Hope Hoops" wheels (Stans ZTR Flow rims on Hope Pro II hubs with Sapim D/B spokes) and a tubeless Stan's setup with Specialized Control tires

wicked build, have fun Steve!

spitfire quote of the year

Much love to the Banshee Pride. I can no longer say that I have the lone Banshee in Crested Butte Colorado. There is a reason we love them so....

Via a new Banshee owner quote from owner's girlfriend....

"You should probably change your relationship status from Ciera Glenn to Miss Spitfire, considering you left me for 8 days to go have fun with her.
Have fun riding her babe!"

All I have to say is, #1 Keith, thank you so kindly for creating the love of mine AND others. And #2 Banshee Bikes really are as cool as you hear they are. Go ride one, but I warn you, you will fall deeply in LOVE!

Forks: X-fusion Vengeance HLR (160mm of plush goodness)
Stem: Thomson 70mm
Bars: Raceface next 3/4" rider
Grips: ODI lockon
Brakes: Avid Elixir R
Wheels: Hope Pro 2 (bolt up rear option)/ Stans Flow rims
Tires: Specilized Eskar Control
Seatpost: Raceface Evolve

Pedals: Superstar Components Magnesium
Drivetrain: 2011 XO cranks and rear derailleur PG1091 chain, and 1070 cassette.

This bike is now ready to be used and abused! I can't wait.

Set your Sag!

The most important thing to get right when setting up your shock is to get the sag right... get that right and your 80% done, then you just have to dial in the damping settings.

So, here are some graphs showing the Suspension Sag vs. Shock Compression for each of our full sus rigs.

A lot of people think 30% sock compression = 30% sag, but that is not normally the case, it all changes due to leverage ratio curves. Hopefully these graphs I made up will help you tune your bike in more accurately.

Spitfire Headset Options

I've had a bunch of people e-mail me to ask about Spitfire V1 headsets recently now that the frames have started shipping out.

The spitfire V1 has a head tube that is tapered between 1.125" ZS top (44.0mm diameter) to 1.5" traditional bottom (49.61mm diameter).

So depending on your fork there are 3 options depending on the setup you want.

If you are running a 130-150mm travel fork with 1 1/8" steerer I would personally recommend the following:

If you are running a 130-150mm tapered fork something like this would work:

If you are running a 150-160mm travel fork with 1 1/8" steerer then to keep the geometry in line I would recommend running a zero stack lower cup setup like this:

Same top cup, but a flush mount bottom cup like the bottom part of this (you can buy this separately from cane creek, don't worry!)
So with 150mm forks with 1 1/8" steerers gives you the option depending on what geometry you are after.

These are the geometries you will get with the different setups.

I picked this style tapered head tube, as I felt it gave you guys the most options with regards to headsets and geometry in the tapered package.

I'll just do all the weights in one post

All frames are with hanger except the Amp... which includes the seatcollar at 55grams

All are mediums... the raw ones do include the clearcoat and are as sold.

No shocks or shock hardware are in the frames as you should be able to find out the weight from the shock manufacturer of your choice then add together with our frame weights to come up with the total. I figured I do this as its the most fair and it will be easier to compare our frames to others out there.

Of course when the Legend is done I'll weigh that and I will get weights of the Paradoxs [although in previous posts i've thrown it up already]

Spitfire update

I know there has been a lot of questions about the Spitfire and people are wanting to see what they look like etc.

So I have the team blue model and will be taking pics of the rest of the bikes and all their colors on Saturday and Sunday.

Some people love the team blue [like me] and others aren’t so stoked on it [like Keith] so there is a white option with blue links and a grey option like the one Keith is riding around on.

I have to say I love the tapered headtube that Keith did… its so subtle you hardly even notice its tapered. I’m glad we did it and not just as a matter of aesthetics but because it opens up alot of more practical options for the rider. I would be amiss if I didn't give a nod to all the riders on mtbr.com on the banshee forum for giving their ideas and comments. I know it was valuable in Keith making his final decision as he bounced between 1-1/8 and Taper... thanks guys

Not sure if you notice or not but we’ve also beefed up and improved the little creature on the headtube. The badge is much higher… and more expensive then the previous ones. [We’re not raising prices tho]. I just want to keep improving and any place me and Keith see where we can make our bikes better we’re going to go there.
